The biggest mystery with the D’s is that most of those who carry the D. themselves do not know fully what it means either  

in the series, few characters have the middle initial “D.”. This mysterious middle initial has been called “the Will of D” (Dの意志 D no Ishi^?) or “D’s will” by several characters in One Piece. Some translations mistakenly refer to it as“Gol D’s will” in reference to Gol D. Roger, the late pirate king. The English dub by 4Kids chooses to refer to the D as the “Gol D.’s will”, while the FUNimation dub refers to it simply as “the Spirit of D.” both deriving from a mistranslation of the original Japanese text. In the recap supplement Grand Line Times, they were referred to as “The men of D.”

It is not clear what the significance of the shared middle initial is, but it appears that all share a similar faith in their own (and others’) dreams and/or destiny.

Sebuah ciri khas yang unik dari ‘D’ adalah di dalam kematian. Mereka sering kali terlihat tersenyum lebar di saat-saat kematian mereka, seakan-akan mereka menerima saat tak mampu lagi untuk lolos dari kematian itu dan menunjukan ketidaktakutannya menghadapi kematian. Reaksi banyak karakter yang menjadi saksi semua itu sering kali terkejut atau tidak percaya karena sulit dibayangkan seseorang tidak merasa ketakutan akan kematian. Sejauh ini kejadian unik tersebut telah terlihat sekitar enam kali:

• Monkey D. Luffy tertawa saat perahu pertamanya masuk ke dalam pusaran air
• Gol D. Roger ternsenyum di saat eksekusinya
• Smoker menyaskisan Monkey D. Luffy tersenyum dengan cara yang sama seperti Gol D. Roger saat Buggy hampir saja membunuhnya
• Nico Robin juga menyaksikan Jaguar D. Saul tertawa dan tersenyum saat dibekukan oleh Aokiji
• Portgas D. Rouge terlihat tersenyum saat menamakan anaknya Ace sesaat sebelum kematiaanya karena melahirkan
• Ace tersenyum setelah berpamitan dan menyampaikan kata-kata terakhirnya kepada Luffy di Marineford. (source)
